The Board of Education of the City of Marietta is composed of seven citizens representing each of the city wards and each serving four-year terms. As representatives of the people, board members are responsible for ensuring that school system operations are efficient, financially and legally sound, and focused on the best interest of Marietta's children.

02/25 Board Approves Revised 2014-2015 School Calendar
The Board of Education of the City of Marietta, at their Feb. 25, 2014, meeting revised the dates for Marietta City Schools 2015 Spring Break to more closely align with other area school systems. The revised calendar also provides advanced notice that the February 2015 Presidents Day Holiday/Mid-Winter Break may be utilized for severe weather make-up days if needed. The board approved the calendar revision in a
vote of 7:0.

Marietta City Schools (MCS) will host a Swearing-In Reception and Ceremony
at 5 p.m., Tuesday, January 14, 2014, for two new members and five incumbents of the Board of Education of the City of Marietta. Excel Compensation Plan 12/18/2013 Board Approves Phase II – Excel Compensation Plan
On December 17, 2013, the Board of Education of the City of Marietta approved Phase II of the Marietta City Schools (MCS) Excel Compensation Plan to include the transition to tuition reimbursement and the piloting of enhanced teacher roles and responsibilities. In September 2013, the board approved the continuation of research and development of a revised compensation model for certified teachers. The ultimate goal of this work is to raise student achievement by attracting, retaining, and leveraging a highly effective workforce in a manner that is fiscally sustainable, a goal which is consistent with both the district’s charter system petition and strategic plan goals. MCS legal team, Education Resource Strategies (ERS) and Greenway Strategy Management, have been engaged to provide development expertise and guidance, and system stakeholders have provided input and feedback throughout the research and development process. 12/10/2013 MCS Supports PED Awareness Week, Dec. 8 - 14
Governor Deal proclaimed December 8 – 14, 2013 , Performance-Enhancing Drug (PED) Awareness Week. PED's are used to gain a competitive edge in athletics and have become more prevalent among student athletes in the United States. The Board of Education of the City of Marietta, at their Dec. 10 Work Session/Special Called Meeting, issued a resolution in support of Governor Deal's Proclamation. It is essential that student athletes and parents understand the risks involved with Performance Enhancing Drugs.

9/18/2013 Employee Compensation Redesign
On September 18, 2012, the Board of Education of the City of Marietta approved pursuing a Race to the Top resource reallocation review project awarded to the Georgia Department of Education with Education Resource Strategies (ERS). Marietta City Schools (MCS) along with four other school districts, including Fulton County participated in this work to maximize resources (defined broadly as time, people, and money). As an extension to this work, MCS partnered with ERS to explore compensation redesign. The district’s goal in working with ERS was to develop a balanced compensation system that leads to systematic improvement in teaching effectiveness over time; helps us attract and retain a high-potential teaching force; leverages expertise for continuous improvement; aligns a high-performing teaching force to support district strategies and performance goals; and compensates a high-performing teaching force in a fiscally sustainable way.

6/18/2013 Board Approves FY14 Budget
The Board of Education of the City of Marietta adopted the Fiscal Year 2014 (FY14) general fund budget at their June 18, 2013, meeting. The board voted 6-0 to adopt the budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2013. The adopted budget balances revenues and expenditures at $81.8 million, compared to FY13's budget of $80.8 million, an increase of 1.1 percent, or $924,643.

In a vote of 7:0, the Board of Education of the City of Marietta adopted a two-year school calendar at their Dec. 18, 2012, meeting. The 2013-2014 school calendar begins classes Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, and the 2014-2015 calendar begins classes Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2014.

11/13/2012 Board Approves SPLOST IV Resolution & Project List
In separate votes of 6:1, with board member Brett Bittner opposed, the board approved the Superintendent’s recommendation of the proposed special-purpose local-option sales tax (SPLOST IV) project list; the SPLOST IV Concurrent Resolution to provide for the calling of an election; and the contract for calling a Special Election on

07/10/2012 Marietta City Schools Sets Millage Rate Millage Remains Flat, No Overall Increase
The Board of Education of the City of Marietta will hold a special called meeting Tuesday, July 24 at 6:30 p.m. to set the school district millage rate (property tax rate) at 19.157 mills, a rate that maintains the current millage of 17.97 flat for the thirteenth consecutive year. The new millage includes a reclassified millage of 1.187 of School Bond Debt as part of the property tax rate effective Fiscal Year 2013 (FY13). More»

The Board of Education of the City of Marietta adopted the Fiscal Year 2013 (FY13) general fund budget at their June 19, 2012, meeting. The board voted 5-0, with Stuart Fleming absent, to adopt the budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2012. The adopted budget balances revenues and expenditures at $77.7 million, compared to FY12's budget of $74.6 million, an increase of 4 percent, or $3.1 million.

Groundbreaking ceremonies for the new multi-use auditorium at Marietta High School (MHS) were held Thursday, May 17. The MHS Blue Devil band and Chorus performed for guests. The groundbreaking Crew included Jill Mutimer, chair of the Board of Education; Tony Fasola, board member; Randy Weiner, board vice chair; Irene Berens, board member; Leigh Colburn, MHS Principal; and Marietta City Schools Superintendent, Dr. Emily Lembeck.

05/16/2012 Board Approves Tentative FY2013 Budget, May 15
In a vote of 6:0, the Board of Education of the City of Marietta approved at their May 15, 2012 meeting, the Superintendent's recommendation to tentatively adopt the Fiscal Year 2013 (FY2013) budget as submitted for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2012. The tentatively adopted budget balances revenues and expenses at $77.7 million. The budget is available for public review leading up to the June 19, 2012, work session when the board is expected to approve the FY2013 budget. Fiscal Year 2013 runs from July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013.

On March 6, 2012, City of Marietta voters approved a $7 million bond to build a 750-seat multi-use auditorium at Marietta High School (MHS). The $8.9 million auditorium will be paid for with a $7 million, 5-year obligation bond and $2 million from the district's building fund. The multi-use auditorium will be used for school functions, performances, rehearsals, competitions, events, lectures and staff development meetings. Marietta's school millage rate could remain unchanged for at least the first two years of the bond, and increase by approximately $11 per year (on a $200,000 home) in year three to five of the bond.

10/26/2011 Council Approves MHS Auditorium
Bond Referendum - March 2012 Ballot

On March 6, 2012, City of Marietta voters will get to decide whether to approve a $7 million bond referendum to build a multi-use auditorium at Marietta High School (MHS). The Marietta City Council at their October 26, 2011, meeting approved a Resolution calling for Referendum by the citizens of the City of Marietta on whether or not to adopt up to $7,145,000 of City of Marietta general obligation bonds for the purpose of financing at MHS a portion of the costs of acquiring, constructing, improving, modifying, renovating and equipping, including capitalized interest and related expenses, a multi-use auditorium, instructional space and associated facilities. If voters approve the bond, Marietta's school millage rate could remain unchanged for at least the first two years of the bond, and increase by approximately $11 per year (on a $200,000 home) in year three to five of the bond.

The Board of Education of the City of Marietta, at their Oct. 18, 2011, meeting approved a date change to the 2011-2012 School Calendar. The date change moves the Teacher Professional Learning date from Feb. 7, 2012, to March 6, 2012 to coincide with the Presidential Primary election date. The board approved the calendar revision in a vote of 7:0.

Cobb Alcohol Taskforce 03/10/2011 Board Proclaims April Alcohol Awareness Month
The Board of Education of the City of Marietta, at their regularly scheduled meeting of March 15, 2011, at 7 p.m., will proclaim April 2011 – Alcohol Awareness Month in recognition of National Alcohol Awareness Week. The proclamation encourages community leaders and adult citizens to join with the Cobb Alcohol Taskforce in efforts to implement enforcement, policy and education strategies that will reduce underage and youth binge drinking.

Students/Staff To Makeup Missed School Days

At their Tuesday, Jan. 18 meeting, the Board of Education of the City of Marietta approved the Superintendent’s recommendation, in a vote of 7:0, to require Marietta City Schools’ students to makeup the equivalent of four of the five school days missed last week due to severe winter weather school closures.

All students are required to attend school March 14 and 15, and the class day will be extended by one hour Jan. 31 to Feb. 4, March 7 to 11, and March 14 to 16.

Transportation will be provided with school buses departing an hour later per a modified Bell Schedule in effect on those days. A letter from the Superintendent explaining the recommendation will be sent home to all MCS parents/guardians this week.

School District In Digital Technology

For the fifth year running, Marietta City Schools (MCS) placed in the Top 10 U.S. School Districts in Digital Technology. MCS tied for 9th place, among medium-sized school districts (2,500 – 15,000 students), in the nation’s seventh annual Digital School Districts Survey by e.Republic’s Center for Digital Education and the National School Boards Association (NSBA). The annual top ten rankings reflect those school boards/districts with the fullest implementation of technology benchmarks in the evolution of digital education, as represented in the survey questions.

Marietta City Schools tied for 10th place, among medium-sized school districts, in the nation’s sixth annual Digital School Districts Survey. The announcement made recently by e.Republic’s Center for Digital Education, the National School Boards Association (NSBA) and Converge Online magazine recognizes school districts and school boards across the nation whose use of digital technology in interfacing with students, parents and community, district governing, and bettering of operations proved exceptional.

 
08/17/2009 School Board Members Training Ensures Educational Quality
Members of the Board of Education of the City of Marietta have completed the required board member training activities sponsored by the Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA). At the Aug. 18, 2009 scheduled school board meeting, Marietta school board members will receive certificates of recognition for successfully completing their GSBA training for the period July 1, 2008 – June 30, 2009.

The Board of Education of the City of Marietta adopted the FY10 budget at their Jun. 16 meeting. The board voted 7-0 to adopt the budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1. The adopted budget balances revenues and expenses at $80.8 million, compared to FY09's balanced budget of $83.3 million, a decrease of 3 percent, or $2.53 million.
05/19/2009 Board Tentatively Adopts FY10 Budget
The Board of Education of the City of Marietta tentatively adopted the FY10 budget at their May 19 meeting. The Superintendent recommended the tentative adoption of the FY2010 budget. The revised budget includes a half-step application funded by the federal ARRA funds and allocated appropriately throughout the budget to all salary schedules. In addition, the revised budget includes a $379,600 adjustment from Outgoing Transfers to Improvement of Instruction Services, to include the Technology Department budget. The board approved the Superintendent’s recommendation in a vote of 6-0, with board member Scott Allen absent.

The Board of Education of the City of Marietta approved a revision to the 2009-2010 school calendars at their Apr. 21 meeting. The revised 2009-2010 school calendar reduced new teacher orientation from four days to two. The board approved the revised calendar in a vote of 7-0.

02/10/2009 Board Approves Personnel
and Program Changes FY10 Budget

On Feb. 10, 2009, the Board of Education of the City of Marietta approved a number of personnel and program changes for FY10. Included are workforce reductions resulting from an increase in class size that effectively saves the district $2.5M in additional staffing and other resources. Restructuring of other operational areas and program changes will save the system approximately $766,000.

The Board of Education of the City of Marietta approved the 2009-2010 school calendars at their Dec. 16 meeting. The 2009-2010 school calendars begin school on Aug. 10. The board approved the calendar in a vote of 6-0, with board member Tom Smith absent.

  • Enact policies that guide the operation of the system; Adopt programs of study and evaluate program effectiveness;
  • Employ staff members upon recommendation of the superintendent;
  • Approve budgets, financial reports and major expenditures;
  • Provide funds for operation;
  • Establish and maintain a system of records and accounts;
  • Plan for the expansion, improvement and financing of the capital building program;
  • Keep the public informed on school issues; and
  • Act as a tribunal at certain employee and student hearings.

Special Called Meeting
  • Friday, November 21, 8 a.m., the Board will hold a special called meeting.

All meetings are held at the Marietta City Schools Administrative Offices located at 250 Howard Street in Marietta and are open to the public.
  • The Marietta Board of Education holds regular meetings, usually twice a month.
  • A work session and special-called meeting is held the second Tuesday of each month* starting at 6 p.m.
  • The regular board meeting is held the third Tuesday of each month* starting at 7 p.m.
  • Occasionally, the board must hold a special meeting outside the normal schedule. Such sessions are posted in the school board office and the system's Web site, and the media are notified at least 24 hours in advance.
