2008-2009 Fact Sheet
Marietta City Schools (MCS) serve some 8,000 students at
eight elementary choice schools—one of which is a Science,
Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Magnet—one middle
school, one sixth-grade school, and one high school. MCS
is home to four Georgia Schools of Excellence and one National School
of Excellence. The school district has approximately 1260 employees.
In June 2008, Marietta City Schools became one of Georgia’s
first Charter School Systems.
MCS is also an International Baccalaureate (IB) World
School district. On April 23, 2008, the school district
became only the second IB World School district in Georgia authorized
to offer the IB Middle Years Program (MYP) for grades 6-10. With
the addition of the IB Middle Years Program to the IB Primary Years
Program (PYP) offering at Sawyer Road Elementary and the long-standing
IB Diploma Program (DP) at Marietta High School, MCS is
one of the very few school systems nationwide able to provide the
full IB (K-12) continuum.
In
October 2007, Marietta City Schools earned initial district accreditation
as a quality school system from the Southern Association of Colleges
and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS
CASI). District Accreditation is valid for five years and
is the highest level of accreditation that a school system can receive
from the SACS CASI organization.
