About Us
Award Winning School System
Marietta City Schools (MCS) serve some 8,000 students at eight elementary choice schools—one of which is a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Magnet—one middle school, one sixth-grade school, and one high school. MCS is home to five Georgia Schools of Excellence: West Side Elementary (1985); Marietta Middle School (1987); A.L. Burruss Elementary (1991, 2003); Marietta High School (2003); Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (2011); and one National School of Excellence: A.L. Burruss Elementary (1992). The school district has approximately 1200 employees. In June 2008, Marietta City Schools became one of Georgia's first Charter Systems.
MCS is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School district. On April 23, 2008, the school district became the first IB World School district in Georgia authorized to offer the IB Middle Years Program (MYP) for grades 6-10. With the addition of the IB Middle Years Program to the IB Primary Years Program (PYP) offered at Sawyer Road Elementary and the long-standing IB Diploma Program (DP) at Marietta High School, MCS is one of only a few school systems nationwide able to provide the full IB (K-12) continuum.
In April 2013, Marietta City Schools (MCS) earned continuing accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI), an accreditation division of AdvancED. In October 2007, Marietta City Schools earned initial district accreditation as a quality school system from SACS CASI. District Accreditation is valid for five years and is the highest level of accreditation that a school system can receive from the SACS CASI organization. More»
MCS has consistently ranked among the top 15 percent of public school systems nationally for the past several years, and has also earned numerous recognitions.
On June 11, 2006, the National Civic League crowned the city of Marietta one of the 10 best communities in the nation as a 2006 All-America City, the oldest and most respected
community recognition award in the country. Our reading and literacy program, Marietta Reads!, played a significant role in Marietta’s selection as an All-America City.
MCS maintains a proud tradition of educational excellence because its citizens expect the best. From support provided by the Marietta Schools Foundation, teachers, administrators and students receive recognition and incentives to excel.
Our schools enjoy low pupil-teacher ratios (20:1), high per pupil expenditures ($9,199 - FY13 Budgeted)), and excellent support staff provisions. 75% of MCS certified staff have a Masters Degree or higher and our teachers are regularly recognized among the best in the state and nation. Technology plays an integral role throughout the system, and all teachers receive a laptop computer upon hiring.
