Marietta City Schools

Superintendent's Office: Welcome

Welcome to Marietta City Schools (MCS), a system rich in tradition, yet future-focused and results-driven. At MCS we value and support academic achievement and literacy. We have implemented many new initiatives in response to the ever-changing opportunities and challenges of educating and preparing tomorrow’s leaders.

Our difference is Excellence, and excellence means remaining focused on our mission "to prepare each of our students through academic achievement for life success." We do this by developing curriculum and programs that meet and effectively serve the educational needs of all students, and fulfill the academic rigor demanded by the new Georgia Performance Standards.

In June 2008, Marietta City Schools became one of Georgia’s first Charter School Systems. MCS is also an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School district. On April 23, 2008, the school district became only the second IB World School district in Georgia authorized to offer the IB Middle Years Program (MYP) for grades 6-10. With the addition of the IB Middle Years Program to the IB Primary Years Program (PYP) offering at Sawyer Road Elementary and the long-standing IB Diploma Program (DP) at Marietta High School, MCS is one of the very few school systems nationwide able to provide the full IB (K-12) continuum.

SACSCASIIn October 2007, Marietta City Schools earned initial district accreditation as a quality school system from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI). District Accreditation is valid for five years and is the highest level of accreditation that a school system can receive from the SACS CASI organization.

MCS has consistently ranked among the top 15 percent of public school systems nationally for the past several years, and has earned numerous recognitions.

The Board of Education of the City of Marietta is officially a 2007 Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA) - School Board of Distinction. Over the last five years, from 2002 to 2007 only 58 districts have achieved this distinction. In addition, The Center for Digital Education and the National School Boards Association (NSBA) named our school board among the Top Tech-Savvy School Boards and winners of the 2007 Digital School Boards Survey for small, medium and large school districts.

Marietta is a great place to live, and a visit to one of our elementary school Choice Academies, or our sixth grade, middle school or high school can best inform you about the innovative educational programs, well-disciplined and safe environments, highly qualified teachers and opportunities available for your child to achieve high standards.

Together we can make a difference. I look forward to meeting more of you, as I continue to reach out to our community throughout the year as we strive to become the system of choice for families.

Sincerely,

Emily Lembeck, Ed.D.
Superintendent
