Promotion and Retention Policy

The Marietta City Schools (MCS) Promotion Policy describes how the school system determines the promotion of students from Kindergarten through grade twelve. The policy also states the consequences for students who do not meet the promotion criteria outlined for the specific grade level. The MCS Promotion Policy applies to all duly enrolled students regardless of the number of days enrolled in a Marietta City school. Transfer students must also meet all requirements for promotion.

In addition to explaining the consequences for not meeting the criteria for promotion, the policy explains the opportunities provided students to meet grade level standards in a compacted timeframe, receive differentiated instruction strategies in the classroom, and participate in instruction extended beyond the regularly scheduled day or year. Furthermore, the promotion, placement and retention of students in grades 3, 5, and 8 are in accordance with State Board Rule 160-4-2-.11.

A quality education requires a joint effort by Marietta City Schools, students, and parents. This partnership will help all children achieve and meet promotion criteria.
