SCHOOL GOVERNANCE TEAMS/SAWYER ROAD COUNCIL SOLICIT INPUT - PROPOSED 2010-2011 SCHOOL CALENDARS

Marietta City Schools School Governance Teams and the School Council at Sawyer Road Elementary will work with their individual schools to solicit input from parents and guardians, and district employees, regarding four proposed calendar options for the 2010-2011 school year. An online calendar survey is available for parents and employee feedback on each school governance webpage or the school council webpage at Sawyer Road Elementary. The calendar survey deadline is Dec. 1.

11/17 SCHOOLS AND DISTRICT OFFICES
CLOSE FOR THANKSGIVING HOLIDAYS
All Marietta City schools close for the Thanksgiving Holiday from Monday, Nov. 23 through Friday, Nov. 27. Classes end at all district schools Friday, Nov. 20 and resume Monday, Nov. 30, 2009.

Marietta City Schools' central administrative offices, including the Department of Special Services, Transportation and Food Service offices will close for the Thanksgiving Holiday from Wednesday, Nov. 25 through Friday, Nov. 27, 2009.

11/3 DISTRICT ANNOUNCES APPLICATION WINDOW ELEMENTARY CHOICE ACADEMIES PROGRAM
Marietta City Schools (MCS) today announced the open application period for its elementary schools Choice Academies program for 2010-2011. Interested Marietta City residents wishing to apply for the MCS Choice Academies program must submit the appropriate documentation between Nov. 9, 2009 and Jan. 15, 2010. ELIE KIHONIA, MASTER DRUM CLASS
AT BURRUSS, NOV. 20
Master Drummer, Elie Kihonia will hold a master drum class with the A.L. Burruss Unity Drummers, on Nov. 20 at 9:45 a.m. in the A.L. Burruss Elementary music room. Unity Drummers, organized by Burruss 1st grade teacher Wendy Campagna, will perform with Elie Kihonia on Sat., Nov. 21 at the Wilson Student Center Theater at Southern Polytechnic State University at 6 p.m.
 

MHS HOSTS IB ORIENTATION
FOR 8TH GRADERS, DEC. 1
Marietta High School (MHS) will host an International Baccalaureate (IB) Orientation for 8th graders at 7 p.m. on Dec. 1, 2009. All rising 9th grade middle school students interested in applying to the IB Diploma Program should attend. For more information, contact Debbie Woolard or Carolyn Worthy at 770.428.2631 ext. 3061. The application deadline for 8th graders is Jan. 12, 2010. Marietta City residents and non-residents interested in the IB Diploma Program can apply from Nov.19, 2009 to Jan. 12, 2010.

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH
Tanya Griggs, a teacher at the Marietta Performance Learning Center (PLC) at Woods-Wilkins is an inspiration to her students as well as her colleagues. Tanya builds relationships with her students that go beyond the classroom and therefore brings out the best in event the most reluctant learners. Tanya was recently recognized as an 11Alive Class Act Teacher for her ability to inspire teens others might write off. Her students describe her as a great teacher and a great friend, and as someone that they can depend on.
STUDENT OF THE MONTH
Likeam Wise is a junior at Marietta High School. He is a model of exceptional leadership to his peers, and his teachers describe him as responsible and dependable. Likeam is on the school football team; he also leads his own band, serves on school improvement committees, and recently served as the MHS student representative on the district's strategic planning team. This year, Likeam is the Secretary and Treasurer of a newly established male academic leadership program at the high school called GENTS and he is slated to be President of GENTS next year.

BOOK FAIR, DEC. 1-4
Marietta City Schools (MCS) education partner Scholastic Book Fairs will host a book fair at the MCS central office located at 250 Howard Street in Marietta from Dec. 1-4. The book fair benefits Marietta Reads! Book Fair hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

READS AT ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS, NOV. 17 - 19
Rotary Club of Marietta members visit Marietta City elementary schools to read Crazy Hair Day to 2nd graders in support of Marietta Reads! Rotarians also donate copies of the book to the students. Park Street photos 
 
 
MARIETTA READS! PARTNERS WITH MELLOW MUSHROOM FOR MONTHLY SPIRIT NIGHTS
Beginning in November, Mellow Mushroom Kennesaw will host Marietta Reads! Spirit Nights on the second Tuesday of each month, with a portion of proceeds to benefit Marietta Reads! Marietta Reads! Spirit Night will be held Tuesday, Dec. 8 from 3 p.m. to close. The initiative includes both dine-in and take-out orders. Mellow Mushroom Kennesaw is located at 1133 Chastain Road, Kennesaw, GA 30144.

MARIETTA METRO ROTARY DICTIONARY
DONATION AT DUNLEITH AND WEST SIDE, NOV. 17 & 19

As part of its Dictionary Project, the Rotary Club of Marietta Metro gave new dictionaries to Dunleith Elementary and West Side Elementary third-graders. The gift of dictionaries was very much appreciated by the students and teachers. Thank you, Rotarians!
 
 
MHS FBLA SUPPORTS MUST MINISTRIES, NOV. 13
Students in Marietta High School's Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) recently collected over 250 food items as a donation to MUST Ministries for families in need during this holiday season.
 
 
WEST SIDE TREATS FOR TROOPS, NOV. 13
West Side Elementary students recently joined forces with Operation Stars & Stripes, Inc. to collect Halloween candy treats for our Troops. Operation Stars & Stripes is an all volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to supporting America's military and their families.
 
 
MCAA CULINARY CLUB TRAVELS
NATIONWIDE, FALL 2009
Students in the new MCAA Culinary Club led by Chef Dean Berthelot, the executive chef at Ray's in the City, are "traveling" throughout the United States and learning about and preparing foods from particular regions. Students enjoy learning skills of food preparation and cooking from an expert and sampling the many fine dishes they create. Photos» 
 

DUNLEITH "HAT DAY" FOR UNITED WAY, NOV. 6
Students and staff at Dunleith Elementary recently donated $1 to the United Way for the opportunity to wear their hats. The Hat Day for United Way fundraising effort will help better the lives of all in Cobb County, especially those recently hit by the flooding that took place in September.
 

MCAA HOSTS 5TH ANNUAL
STUDENT CAREER DAY, NOV. 6
Marietta Center for Advanced Academics recently hosted its 5th Annual Student Career Day. Fifth graders prepared resumes and participated in mock interviews, and 3rd and 4th graders toured the displays and interviewed companies to gain awareness about career opportunities. Thirty four companies participated, including Lockheed Martin, MUST Ministries, Georgia Aquarium, and WellStar among others. Photos» 
 

BURRUSS SGT HOSTS PUMPKINS
AND A PARADE, OCT. 31
The A.L. Burruss Elementary School Governance Team (SGT) recently sponsored Pumpkins and a Parade at Laurel Park. Dad's were wrapped as mummies, ate sugar covered donuts from a string, played tape-the-nose-on-the-pumpkin, and carved pumpkins. Photos»

NEW PARTNERS AT LARGE, NOV. 17
Marietta City Schools welcomed new Partners at Large (PAL) at the Nov. 17 school board meeting: Dave & Busters and Mellow Mushroom. Both PALs will sponsor and support a number of district and school activities. Dave & Busters will provide gift cards as part of their teacher recognition effort and Mellow Mushroom will host Spirit Nights! In support of Marietta Reads!

PARTNERS IN EDUCATION, NOV. 17
Lockheed Elementary hosted a signing ceremony to welcome its Partners in Education. Second grade students sang for the Partners and two fifth grade students, Malik and Raven read poems. Partners in Education represented at the event were: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Chick-fil-A at East Lake, East Cobb YMCA, Life College, Lockheed Martin, and Marietta Martial Arts.
