Marietta City Outpaces State and Metro
Scores 2009 Georgia High School Writing
Test |

Marietta City Schools 11th
graders increased their mean scale score (233) by 7
points over last year on the 2009 Georgia High School
Writing Test (GHSWT). This year, Marietta's mean scaled
score of 233 is 12 points higher than the Georgia
average of 221, and 10 points higher than the Atlanta
metro score of 223. Of the 349 students taking the test,
96 percent either met or exceeded

Partner - Georgia Aquarium Hosts Aqua "Tech" Symposium
Marietta City Schools,
in collaboration with the Georgia Aquarium, will host
the second Annual Aqua "TECH" Symposium on May 2, 2010
at the Georgia Aquarium. The Aqua "TECH" Symposium
brings together MCS
magnet program students across grades 3 - 8 for an
exhibition of science, technology, engineering and

Ensemble Performance Earn Superior
Ratings Marietta Middle School seventh grade
band students Will Eubanks (snare drum solo), Shanna
Mattson (marimba solo), Rebekah Cutts, Claire Mulkey,
Elizabeth Toland and Lillianne Daniels (woodwind
quartet), under the direction of Brian Westphal,
recently earned "Superior" ratings at the Georgia Music
Educators Association (GMEA) Solo & Ensemble

MHS Chorus Winter
Holiday Concert, Dec. 7
 The Marietta High School Choir will
perform its Winter Holiday Concert at 7 p.m. Monday,
Dec. 7, 2009 in the MHS Performance Gym. The Winter
Holiday Concert will open with two winter songs, and the
program includes a Chanukah set, a Christmas set, a
secular holiday set, and two Christmas pieces from
Africa. The Blue Devil Show Choir will perform a
Christmas Pops Trio, and several students will sing
holiday themed solos and duets.
MHS Dance Ensemble
Winter Dance Concerts, Dec.
9-10  The Marietta High School Dance Ensemble
will perform their Winter Dance Concerts at 7 p.m.
Wednesday, Dec. 9 and Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009 in the MHS
Black Box Theater. "Tell Me A Story" will feature a
special movement telling of the children's story "Anansi
the Spider" and a collection of dance works that include
both student and faculty choreography. Doors open at
6:30 p.m. Admission is $5 in advance and $7 at the door.
MHS Concert and
Symphonic Bands
Winter Concert, Dec. 10  The Marietta High School Concert and
Symphonic Bands perform a Winter Concert at 7 p.m.
Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009 in the MHS Performance Gym. The
Concert will feature a mix of standard band literature
as well as some traditional holiday favorites. The MHS
Symphonic Band will be joined during the concert by the
Marietta Middle School Eighth Grade Band. Doors open at
6:30 p.m. Admission is
free. |

Mellow
Mushroom Kennesaw will host Marietta Reads! Spirit Nights
on the second Tuesday of each month, with a portion of
proceeds to benefit Marietta Reads!
Marietta Reads! Spirit Night will be
held Tuesday, Dec. 8 from 3 p.m. to close.
The initiative includes both dine-in and take-out

Baseball Scholarship, Nov. 20
 Chavez Clarke, a senior
at Marietta High School (MHS), and a 3
year starter on the Blue
Devils baseball team is the recipient of a baseball
scholarship to Georgia Institute of Technology.

MMS Students Job
Shadow, Nov. 17 Marietta Middle School students
recently participated in the Cobb Chamber Job Shadow
experience, hosted by Cobb Marietta Water Authority, in
partnership with Junior Achievement. The students toured
the Cobb Marietta Water Authority facility and shadowed
site professionals. The Cobb Chamber Job Shadow
experience provides a fulfilling, unique community
service opportunity that helps promote an organization's
involvement in education and helps to prepare the future
workforce.
Burruss Key Club
Readers Recognized, Oct. 30
 The A.L.
Burruss Elementary Key Club is a reading program for
kindergarten and first grade students that encourages
reading outside the classroom and promotes reading at
home. Key Club members were recognized during the
school's October assembly. The club currently has 22
kindergarten and 20 first grade students, and 2 students
have already read over 350 books each! Photos»

a campus beautification day. MMS
Partners in Education - Marietta First United
Methodist Church and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity helped
