SCHOOL AND DISTRICT OFFICES
CLOSED FOR WINTER HOLIDAY

ChristmasAll Marietta City Schools, central administrative offices, including the Department of Special Services, Transportation and Food Service offices close for the Winter Holiday beginning Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009 through Friday, Jan. 1, 2010. Regular operation hours resume at these locations, Monday, Jan. 4, 2010. Classes end (end of 1st semester) at all Marietta City schools Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009 and begin Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010.

12/18 District Hosts Swearing-In Ceremony School Board Members - Jan. 3
Marietta City Schools hosts a Swearing-In Ceremony and Reception, Jan. 3, 2010, at 6 p.m. for new and current members of the Board of Education of the City of Marietta. Justice P. Harris Hines will perform the board Swearing-In Ceremony. The ceremony, followed by a reception, at the MCS Administrative Offices located at 250 Howard Street in Marietta is open to the public. 12/16 Board Approves 2010-2011 School Calendar

The Board of Education of the City of Marietta approved the 2010-2011 school calendar at their Dec. 15 meeting. The 2010-2011 school calendar begins school Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010. The board approved the calendar in a vote of 7:0.

12/11 Marietta High School Named Among Best
U.S. News & World Report's Annual List
Marietta High School (MHS) was recently included in U.S. News & World Report's annual list of the best high schools in the country. Of the 21,786 public high schools examined by U.S. News and its partner in the project, School Evaluation Services, the magazine named MHS a bronze medal winner. More»
 
 

12/09 Elementary School Bus Safety Partnership Program Announced
The new Elementary School Bus Safety Partnership Program takes effect Jan. 6, 2010. Schools will send information to elementary households the week of Dec. 14, 2009. School bus drivers will provide copies of the Bus Safety Partnership agreement to students on Jan. 6, 2010, and elementary households will have one week to review the document and return the signed agreement to their school bus driver. Interested Marietta City residents wishing to apply for the MCS Choice Academies program for 2010-2011 must submit the appropriate documentation between Nov. 9, 2009 and Jan. 15, 2010. The Choice Academies application deadline is Jan. 15, 2010. More»

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH
Ms. Tamie Clark teaches third grade and also serves as a special education inclusion teacher at Sawyer Road Elementary. She is an advisory member of the Principal's Cabinet, and is part of the leadership team that helped the school become an International Baccalaureate World School.

Ms. Clark was recently nominated an 11Alive Class Act Teacher for her creative classroom instruction methods blending art and drama to make learning fun. View Video
STUDENT OF THE MONTH
Alex Garrett is an 8th grade student at Marietta Middle School. She is an exceptional student who always strives to do her best and excels at what she attempts. She has numerous academic achievements and her two best qualities are that she is empathetic, she is always willing to go out of her way to help others, and she is one of the most gracious persons you would ever meet. Alex is also actively involved in the MMS Beta Club and in a number of other school activities.

Burruss Hosts Marietta Reads! Read-In, Dec. 11
A. L. Burruss Elementary recently held a school-wide Marietta Reads! Read-In. Marietta Reads! mascot, Mari-Etta stopped by some classrooms to read with children as they celebrated a day of reading.

 
 

MSGA Hosts Marietta Reads!
Pancake Breakfast, Nov. 20

Marietta Sixth Grade Academy recently hosted a pancake breakfast for students who earned 50 Marietta Reads! Accelerated Reader (AR) points during the first quarter. The event drew about 60 attendees, and everyone had a great time.

 
 
Marietta Reads! - Mellow Mushroom
Monthly Spirit Nights
Mellow Mushroom Kennesaw hosts Marietta Reads! Spirit Nights on the second Tuesday of each month, with a portion of proceeds to benefit Marietta Reads! The initiative includes both dine-in and take-out orders. In 2010, Marietta Reads! Spirit Nights will be held Tuesday, Jan. 12, Feb. 9, Mar. 9, Apr. 13, and May 11 from 3 p.m. to close. Mellow Mushroom Kennesaw is located at 1133 Chastain Road in Kennesaw.

Burruss Drama Club
Performs "Pinocchio", Dec. 11

The A. L. Burruss Drama Club recently performed "Pinocchio" for the student assembly and also at the Blackwell Playhouse. The Drama Club's next performance will be The Wizard of Oz.
 
 
Sawyer Road and MCAA Choruses
Underground Atlanta, Dec. 9

The Sawyer Road Elementary Oceaneer Players Chorus and the Marietta Center for Advanced Academics Chorus recently performed at Underground Atlanta. Lunch and song, how fun!
 
 

Lockheed Polar Express Extravaganza, Dec. 9
The Lockheed Elementary School media center Polar Express Extravaganza provides students a candy cane, a bell necklace, and a chance to learn about Chris Van Allsburg's book Polar Express. Students also complete extension activities in Reading and Mathematics.

 
 

Hickory Hills Recognized - 100,000th ARTSBRIDGE Participant, Dec. 7
In recognition of the 100,000 student attendee milestone, The Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre Foundation will provide Hickory Hills Elementary with either an artist-in-residence for a week or for a day of in-school assemblies. The school will also receive a 12" X 12" paver that will be placed in the Cobb Energy Performing Arts plaza with the following inscription: "We salute Hickory Hills Elementary and our 100,000th ARTSBRIDGE participant.

 
 

Burruss Kindergarten Thanksgiving

Celebration, Nov. 19
A.L Burruss Elementary kindergarten classes recently performed their annual Thanksgiving program for parents. The students sang several songs and afterwards, parents enjoyed lunch with their child. A festive time was had by all. Photos»

Cybersafety Booklet For Parents/Kids Now Available

Net Cetera: Chatting with Kids About Being Online, a new booklet released by the Federal Trade Commission, tells parents and teachers what they need to know to talk to kids about issues like cyber bullying, sexting, mobile phone safety, and protecting the family computer. The free booklet is available at OnGuardOnline.gov, the federal government's online safety Web site.
