Students Set To Compete - MCS Annual Spelling Bee

Marietta City Schools will host its annual Spelling Bee, Friday, Jan. 29 at 10 a.m. at the MCS Administrative Offices located at 250 Howard Street in Marietta. The Marietta Education Association (MEA) sponsors the annual event. More»

Awarded $4,300 Lowes Grant
Sawyer Road Elementary School science teacher, Susan Pleak is the recipient of a Lowe's grant valued at approximately $4,300. The grant monies will go towards the school's Nature Trail project. More»

MHS Basketball Alumni Night &
Program Dedication to Coach Hood, Jan. 23
The Marietta High School (MHS) Blue Devils Basketball Teams have a community night for every home game. Alumni are encouraged to attend and will be recognized during half time of the Boys game. Games begin at 6 p.m. Program will be dedicated to Coach Hood between games.

School Night, Feb. 5
The Marietta High School (MHS) Blue Devils Basketball Teams host a community night for every home game. Marietta City Schools elementary and middle school teachers and students are invited to represent their schools and be recognized during half time of the Boys game. Games begin at 6 p.m. and the Feb. 5 game is a White Out!

BUDGET UPDATE
FY2010/FY2011 Budget Released, Jan. 15
Governor Perdue announced his proposed budget on Friday, Jan. 15, 2010. Marietta City Schools (MCS) is currently studying the Governor's proposed budget that calls for an additional 3 percent cut in K-12 funding for the current Fiscal Year (FY) 2010 budget. The Governor's recommendation also includes a requirement for three furlough days before June 30, 2010. More»
EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH
Kathy Brundage, a payroll accountant in the Finance Department at Marietta City Schools central administrative offices, was named the January 2010 Employee of the Month. Brundage produces the monthly payroll for all Marietta City Schools employees, and is familiar with the payroll software, payroll regulations, tax law, employee benefits and payments. Her supervisor has this to say about Kathy, "We are fortunate to have Kathy in the Marietta City Schools family. She so deserves to have her hard work and accomplishments acknowledged."
STUDENT OF THE MONTH
Nicholas "Cole" Donnelly, a Marietta High School senior and an International Baccalaureate Diploma candidate, was named the January 2010 Student of the Month. Donnelly recently received an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy, an academic package valued at over $400,000. Annually, there are only 1,500 appointments offered out of 10,000 applicants to the Air Force Academy. Donnelly also received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, and a full naval ROTC Scholarship to Duke University.

MCAA Welcomes New
Partner In Education, Jan. 14
Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (MCAA) recently signed TechMatters as a new Partner in Education. TechMatters supports MCAA by volunteering their time to the student educational video gaming initiative, digital science fair, and the technology club.

Sawyer Road, MCAA Win Marietta Reads!

Reading Bowl, Jan. 15
The Sawyer Road Elementary Reading Bowl team placed 1st in the Marietta City Schools 5th Annual Elementary School Reading Bowl. Marietta Center for Advanced Academics placed 2nd. A.L. Burruss Elementary placed 3rd. The 1st and 2nd place teams will compete at the Regional Bowl at the University of West Georgia on Feb. 6, 2010. Congratulations to all teams on their win!

Marietta Reads! - Mellow Mushroom
Monthly Spirit Nights
Mellow Mushroom Kennesaw hosts Marietta Reads! Spirit Nights on the second Tuesday of each month, with a portion of proceeds to benefit Marietta Reads! The initiative includes both dine-in and take-out orders. In 2010, Marietta Reads! Spirit Nights will be held Tuesday, Feb. 9, Mar. 9, Apr. 13, and May 11 from 3 p.m. to close. Mellow Mushroom Kennesaw is located at 1133 Chastain Road in Kennesaw.

RECENT EVENTS

Winter 2010 Kiwanis GEM Awards, Jan. 21
The Kiwanis Club of Marietta supports the students and administrative staff at Marietta City Schools by presenting the "Going the Extra Mile" (GEM) Awards three times each year. The winter 2010, Kiwanis GEM Awards were presented Thursday, Jan. 21 at the Marietta Conference Center.

 
 
MCAA Spelling Bee, Jan. 14

Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (MCAA) recently held their annual spelling bee. Sixteen 4th fourth and 5th grade students competed. Fifth-grader, Niah Haynes, won the bee and now will compete in the Marietta City Schools system spelling bee. Neha Srivatsa, a 4th grade student, was the school's runner up.

Cybersafety Booklet For Parents/Kids Now Available

Net Cetera: Chatting with Kids About Being Online, a new booklet released by the Federal Trade Commission, tells parents and teachers what they need to know to talk to kids about issues like cyber bullying, sexting, mobile phone safety, and protecting the family computer. The free booklet is available at OnGuardOnline.gov, the federal government's online safety Web site.
