SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK (SWAW)
MCS TORNADO DRILL, FEB. 3

Marietta City Schools will participate in a Statewide Tornado drill on Wednesday, Feb. 3 as part of Severe Weather Awareness Week (SWAW) in Georgia. The Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) and the National Weather Service (NWS) have announced the observance of SWAW, Feb. 1-5, 2010.

01/28 System-Wide Kindergarten Registration,

Feb. 8-12, 2010
Marietta City Schools (MCS) kindergarten registration for the 2010-2011 school year begins Feb. 8 and ends Feb. 12, 2010. Registration hours at all MCS elementary schools are from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. A complete listing of Marietta City elementary schools is available at www.marietta-city.org/schools/. 01/25 Sawyer Road Student Selected Poster
Child-Brain Tumor Foundation for Children, Inc.
Sawyer Road Elementary School third-grader, Courtney Hicks will serve, as a poster child for the Brain Tumor Foundation for Children, Inc. Hicks is one of four children to serve in this role statewide. Representatives from the Foundation recently visited Sawyer Road Elementary to photograph and interview Hicks. More» 
 
 

01/22 Marietta Blue Devils Head Football
Coach Friday Richards Announces Retirement

Marietta High School (MHS) Blue Devil Head Coach, Friday Richards, today announced his retirement. Richards, a University of Florida graduate, will retire at the end of the 2009-2010 school year, after 16 seasons as head football coach and 33 years of coaching at MHS. He will continue teaching on a part-time basis at MHS in the 2010-2011 school year. More»

National School Counseling Week 2010, Feb. 1-5
"Celebrate School Counseling" will focus public attention on the unique contribution of professional school counselors within U.S. school systems. National School Counseling Week, sponsored by American School Counselor Association (ASCA), highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.

 

 

MHS Basketball - MCS Elementary & Middle

School Night, Feb. 5
The Marietta High School (MHS) Blue Devils Basketball Teams host a community night for every home game. Marietta City Schools elementary and middle school teachers and students are invited to represent their schools and be recognized during half time of the Boys game. Games begin at 6 p.m. The Feb. 5 game is a White Out!

MHS Hosts "Looking Toward the Future Transition Conference", Feb. 6
Marietta High School will host "Looking Toward the Future Transition Conference", from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 6. Conference registration begins at 9:30 a.m. The conference offered by Cobb-Marietta-Douglas Interagency Transition Council is free and open to the public. Conference attendees will learn about services available to assist students with disabilities. MHS Annual Junior Parent Information

Conferences, Feb. 18 & Feb. 20
The Marietta High School Guidance and Counseling Department will host two information meetings for parents of junior MHS students. Parents will have an opportunity to schedule individual conferences with their child's guidance counselor, and parents and students will be able to meet individually with their counselor to register for senior classes.

BUDGET UPDATE
Governor's Proposed FY2010/FY2011 Budget Released, Jan. 15
Governor Perdue announced his proposed budget on Friday, Jan. 15, 2010. Marietta City Schools (MCS) is currently studying the Governor's proposed budget that calls for an additional 3 percent cut in K-12 funding for the current Fiscal Year (FY) 2010 budget. The Governor's recommendation also includes a requirement for three furlough days before June 30, 2010. More»

Marietta Reads! - Mellow Mushroom
Monthly Spirit Nights
Mellow Mushroom Kennesaw hosts Marietta Reads! Spirit Nights on the second Tuesday of each month, with a portion of proceeds to benefit Marietta Reads! The initiative includes both dine-in and take-out orders. In 2010, Marietta Reads! Spirit Nights will be held Tuesday, Feb. 9, Mar. 9, Apr. 13, and May 11 from 3 p.m. to close. Mellow Mushroom Kennesaw is located at 1133 Chastain Road in Kennesaw.

RECENT EVENTS
Help for Haiti Lockheed "Help for Haiti" A Success, Jan. 19-26
The Lockheed Elementary School "Help for Haiti" campaign was a huge success. Students and faculty donated coins and raised $709.88. All proceeds were donated to Yele at www.yele.org.
 
 

Dunleith Spelling Bee, Jan. 22

Dunleith Elementary recently held their annual spelling bee. Twelve 4th and 5th grade students competed. Fifth grader Kaleb Comer placed 1st and Mikaela Gravit was the school runner up. Kaleb will compete in the system Spelling Bee, Friday, Jan. 29.

Cybersafety Booklet For Parents/Kids Now Available

Net Cetera: Chatting with Kids About Being Online, a new booklet released by the Federal Trade Commission, tells parents and teachers what they need to know to talk to kids about issues like cyber bullying, sexting, mobile phone safety, and protecting the family computer. The free booklet is available at OnGuardOnline.gov, the federal government's online safety Web site.

 
 
Immunization Rules for Kindergarten
and Sixth Grade Students

All children entering kindergarten or sixth grade on or after July 1, 2007 are required to meet the following new Georgia immunization requirements:
