GEORGIA CENSUS AWARENESS WEEK, Mar. 8 - 14
Census 2010 logo The 2010 Decennial Census will be here soon, with census forms mailed to all Georgia residential addresses the week of Mar. 15. The Georgia Complete Count Committee, in cooperation with the Governor and the General Assembly, has declared Mar. 8 - 14 as Census Awareness Week.

03/02 Board Names Scott Burton New Head Coach
Marietta High School Blue Devils Football

The Board of Education of the City of Marietta has named Scott Burton, most recently an Assistant Football Coach at the University of Richmond (Virginia), as the new Head Football Coach at Marietta High School (MHS). Burton will teach Social Studies and serve as Liaison of Football Programs at MHS. He will assume the post Apr. 1, 2010. More»

MHS Hosts GEAR UP College Night, Mar. 31
Marietta High School hosts GEAR UP College Night, Mar. 31, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. in the MHS Seminar Rooms. Parents and students are invited to meet with college recruiters from 13 different colleges and universities across Georgia. Jody Darby of Chattahoochee Technical College will discuss financial aid options.

New! Move On When Ready Program
The Move On When Ready Program (MOWR) is a new dual enrollment opportunity for Marietta High School students to attend a postsecondary institution on a full-time basis during their junior and/or senior year of high school.

ALB Science Fair A.L. Burruss Science Fair, Feb. 25
From volcano eruptions to moldy foods, A.L. Burruss Elementary fifth graders shared their science projects with teachers and students as part of Marietta City Schools Science Celebration Week!  Students and parents toured the science fairs and the young scientists presented their projects.

MCAA Digital Science Fair, Feb. 22
MCAA-Digital Science FairMarietta Center for Advanced Academics (MCAA) recently hosted its annual Digital Science Fair Showcase. The 1st place winners for 3rd grade are Patrick, Mya, Laurel and Adam for the project "Fluorescent vs. Incandescent". The 4th grade 1st place winners are Ashra and Devin for their project titled "Acid Rain". The 1st place winner for 5th grade was Sarah for her project "What's the Fastest Way to Cool a Soda?"

Marietta Reads! - Mellow Mushroom
Monthly Spirit Nights
Mellow Mushroom Kennesaw hosts Marietta Reads! Spirit Nights on the second Tuesday of each month, with a portion of proceeds to benefit Marietta Reads! The initiative includes both dine-in and take-out orders. In 2010, Marietta Reads! Spirit Nights will be held Tuesday, Mar. 9, Apr. 13, and May 11 from 3 p.m. to close. Mellow Mushroom Kennesaw is located at 1133 Chastain Road in Kennesaw.

RECENT EVENTS
Scouts For Food Hickory Hills Scouts For Food, Mar. 1-12
Hickory Hills Elementary Cub Scouts (Pack 1325) are Scouting for Food! This national Boy Scouts program was recognized by President "Teddy" Roosevelt during the great depression. Hickory Hills Cub Scouts set a goal to collect 100 canned and dried goods to honor the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America in 2010. So far, they've collected 150 items. All canned and dried goods will be donated to MUST Ministries.

MHS Team Places 1st Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl-MHS Reading Bowl TeamWins Division Competition, Feb. 27
Marietta High School's (MHS) Reading Bowl Team placed 1st at the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl - Division Competition and now moves on to the state competition at University of Georgia on Mar. 20, 2010. MHS scored 310 points. The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl is an annual event celebrating reading and supports Marietta Reads!, MCS' systemic focus on literacy.

AultMMS Student Wins GAE
District 2 Spelling Bee, Feb. 27

Katie Ault, a Marietta Middle School (MMS) 7th grader, recently won the Georgia Association of Educators District 2 Spelling Bee in round 13 by correctly spelling the word "ergonomic" and her final word "beleaguer." She will now compete at the State Spelling Bee on Mar. 19 in Atlanta.

PS-Principal for a day Park Street Hosts AKA Sorority, Inc. PFAD Program, Feb. 24
Corey Lawson, principal of Park Street Elementary and Sarah-Elaine Jones from Rho Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. recently participated in the Cobb Chamber's 9th Annual Principal for a Day Program (PFAD). Other Marietta City Schools participated as well.

Marietta Kiwanis Read-A-Book Visits Burruss Elementary, Feb. 22
ALB-Kiwanis Read-A-BookEach year Marietta Kiwanis promotes literacy by purchasing a book for every Marietta City Schools first grader. During Read-A-Book Week, Kiwanians visited A.L. Burruss Elementary to read to students and present them with a copy of Henry and Mudge in Puddle Trouble by Cynthia Rylant. Photos»

A L Burruss Quest Speech Competition Burruss QUEST Speech Competition, Feb. 21
Fifteen finalists recently competed in the first annual A.L. Burruss Quest Speech Competition. They each presented speeches of "How I Can Change the World" to a panel of judges. The winners are 1st place: Vesey, 2nd place: Dina, and 3rd place: Elise.

MHS-STAR Studend MHS STAR Student - Cobb County's Best, Feb. 8
Savannah King, a Marietta High School (MHS) senior, was among the 25 Cobb County students recently recognized for their academic excellence at the Kiwanis Club of Metro Marietta's 43rd annual Student and Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) banquet. King and Corey Lawson, her former Science teacher at Marietta Sixth Grade Academy and now Park Street Elementary principal, were featured. In her acceptance speech, she credited Lawson for encouraging her to achieve many things. She is a three sport Varsity Letter athlete, a dancer and a recognized student leader.

GaDOE FreeOnline ExPreSS Tutorial Program, Feb. 1
Beginning Feb. 1, 2010, the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) will offer a free Online ExPreSS (Exam Preparation for Science and Social Studies) Tutorial Program for High School Students. Online ExPreSS modules are self-paced. For more information, click here or visit Online ExPreSS
 
 

Cybersafety Booklet For Parents/Kids Now Available

Net Cetera: Chatting with Kids About Being Online, a new booklet released by the Federal Trade Commission, tells parents and teachers what they need to know to talk to kids about issues like cyber bullying, sexting, mobile phone safety, and protecting the family computer. The free booklet is available at OnGuardOnline.gov, the federal government's online safety Web site.
