Consent Agenda

In a vote of 7:0, the board approved the following items:

 
  • Approval of Proposed Revised Policy IC, IDDD, IDDF and Proposed Repeal of Policy ICD, ICF, ICFA, ID.
  • Approval to Purchase Mobile Laptop Lab
  • Approval of Bid for Network Hardware
  • MHS Broadcast Video Production Lab

Special Recognitions

The board recognized Tamie Clark, a teacher at Sawyer Road Elementary, as the December 2009 Employee of the Month. Clark was recently named an 11Alive Class Act Teacher for her creative classroom instruction methods that blend art and drama to make learning fun and engaging. View video

 

Alex Grainger Garrett, an 8th grade student at Marietta Middle School, is an exceptional student who always strives to do her best and excels at what she attempts. Garrett was named the December 2009 Student of the Month.

 

The Superintendent recognized the Marietta City Schools (MCS) Department of Special Services for earning two awards from the Georgia Department of Education's Division for Special Education Services and the Georgia Council for Administrators of Special Education.

 

The first award recognizes MCS for outstanding efforts to improve the performance of students with disabilities by decreasing the number of students who drop out. The second award recognizes MCS for meeting one or more of the state performance goals for students with disabilities by meeting the state target for graduates with regular education diplomas, and by meeting the state target for reducing the students who drop out of school.

 

The Superintendent and the board also recognized retiring school board members Dr. Scott Allen, Jeanie Carter, and Tom Smith for their years of service and their contributions to the school district.

 
Special Reports

Dr. Donna Ryan, Assistant Superintendent for Special Services and Assessment and teachers and staff of the MCS Department of Special Services presented an Academic Focus report about the school district's Special Education Special Projects to the board. The board also heard an update regarding Ombudsman, the district's accredited off-campus alternative program for at-risk students.


Financial Reports

The board heard a financial update from Erin Franklin, Director of Finance. Franklin reviewed the district's financial reports and school nutrition financials. 

Discussion Agenda 

In a vote of 7:0, the board approved the Superintendent's recommendation to purchase online database subscriptions from GALE Research for Marietta High School. The online subscriptions will be available at school and from home with a password protected site.

 

The board approved, in a vote of 7:0, the Superintendent's recommendation to adopt a modified version of Calendar option #2 for the 2010-2011 school year.  The modified option #2 academic calendar adds two days (to provide a full week) to the Thanksgiving break on Nov. 22 and 23, 2010. The two days were added to the beginning of the school year to address the high school's preference for a mid-week start, and the first day of school was moved to Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010, rather than the proposed start date of Monday, Aug. 16, 2010. Teachers report Thursday, Aug. 5, 2010.

 

The board approved, in a vote of 7:0, the Superintendent's recommendation to adopt as submitted the school district's new Strategic Plan. The new strategic plan is the result of the recently completed Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA) Strategic Improvement Planning process. The inclusive process utilized a GSBA online survey as well as Title I and non-Title I surveys completed by Matthews Consulting in Spring 2009, Planning and Action Teams comprised of all stakeholder groups, and a Community Forum to generate input used to formulate goals, measurable objectives, and possible strategies.

 

In other business, the board approved, in a vote of 7:0, the Superintendent's recommendation to lay on the table for month's review proposed revised Policy IDG, IDDE, and the proposed Repeal of Policy IDG-R and IFD-R. The board also approved the Superintendent's recommendation to lay on the table for month's review proposed revised Policy DK, JHB, IKJ and IFD.

 

Policy revisions are completed as part of an ongoing process to ensure that policies are current in relation to applicable laws, rules, and regulations. The board also approved the Superintendent's recommendation of Torrance Construction Company as the Construction Manager at Risk for renovations and modifications at the Marietta Sixth Grade Academy.

 

In a vote of 7:0, the board approved the Superintendent's recommendation to expend Title I funds to purchase forty laptops and four carts for mobile laptop labs for Park Street Elementary School, and to expend to expend Title I and School Improvement funds for 115 laptops and four carts for mobile laptop labs for the Marietta Sixth Grade Academy.

 

Lastly, the board approved, in a vote of 7:0, the Superintendent's recommendation of the written MCS Tax Deferred Annuity Plan and 403(b) ALT Social Security Plan that complies with the new 403(b) regulations issued by the Internal Revenue Service.
Superintendent Comments

The Superintendent provided a brief update regarding a number of upcoming events for school board members, including the January 3, Board of Education Swearing-In Ceremony and Reception, the Board and Marietta City Council Social at Hickory Hills Elementary, and the January Board Retreat.
