Special Recognitions

The board recognized Kathy Brundage, a payroll accountant in the Finance Department at Marietta City Schools central administrative offices, as the January 2010 Employee of the Month. Brundage produces the monthly payroll for all Marietta City Schools employees, and is familiar with the payroll software, payroll regulations, tax law, employee benefits and payments. 

 

Nicholas "Cole" Donnelly, a Marietta High School senior and an International Baccalaureate Diploma candidate, was named the January 2010 Student of the Month. Donnelly recently received an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy, an academic package valued at over $400,000. Annually, there are only 1,500 appointments offered out of 10,000 applicants to the Air Force Academy. Donnelly also received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, and a full naval ROTC Scholarship to Duke University.

 
Special Reports

Neil Barfield, Executive Director of the Marietta Schools Foundation presented the Foundation's Annual Report to the Board. Danny Smith, MCS Director of Maintenance and Support presented the Annual Coca-Cola Report to the Board. Sarah Towler, MCS Administrative Assistant for State and Federal Programs presented an Academic Focus report to the Board about the school system's Title I Parental Involvement Programs.

Financial Reports
The board heard a monthly financial report update from Erin Franklin, Director of Finance. Franklin reviewed the school system financial reports and school nutrition financials.
Discussion Agenda 

In a vote of 7:0, the board approved the Superintendent's recommendation to amend the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) flow-through budget to reflect the addition of $202,415 in carryover funds from Fiscal Year 2009. IDEA is a law ensuring services to children with disabilities throughout the nation.

 

The board approved, in a vote of 7:0, the Superintendent's recommendation to amend the IDEA ARRA Federal Preschool and State Preschool budgets to reflect the movement of funds.

 

In other business, the board approved, in a vote of 7:0, the Superintendent's recommendation to lay on the table for month's review proposed revised Policy IFBG and IFBG-E2. The board also approved, in a vote of 7:0, the Superintendent's recommendation to increase tuition fees for non-resident students by $300 for Fiscal Year 2011. 

 
Superintendent Comments

The Superintendent provided a brief update regarding a number of upcoming events for school board members including the Superintendent's State of the School System Address at Marietta Kiwanis on January 21, the Board and Marietta City Council Social at Hickory Hills Elementary, the MCS Annual Spelling Bee, and the January Board Retreat at the Hilton Atlanta/Marietta Hotel & Conference Center.
