Dear MCS Parents and Supporters:

Greetings! There are a few weeks left before the official start of school (Aug. 10), and I do hope you are having a wonderful, relaxing and fun summer!

CRCT -- Student Achievement

The staff, students, and parents of Marietta City Schools will be happy to know that our students made some impressive gains in every grade level on the Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) in the areas of mathematics and science. As you know, these two subjects were much talked about in the media last year.

We are proud of the work of our teachers and staff, and the resulting increases in student achievement in math and science, as demonstrated by the 17-point gain in third grade math, an 11-point gain in fifth grade math, and a 14-point gain in eighth grade math. Student gains in science were also significant. Third graders achieved a 10-point gain in science; fifth graders increased scores by 8 points in science, and eighth graders gained by one point.

CRCT -- Students Exceeding Standards

Another exemplary indication of academic achievement is evident in the higher percentages of students exceeding standards on the CRCT. This year, 27 percent of students in third grade exceeded standards in reading, 34 percent exceeded standards in mathematics, and 24 percent exceeded standards in science. Fifth-graders also exceeded standards in greater numbers this year: 18 percent in reading (on par with last year), 31 percent in mathematics, and 24 percent in science. Overall, 27 percent of eighth graders exceeded standards in reading (a 12-point gain over last year), 17 percent in mathematics, and 11 percent in science.

In 2009, there were 201 more students (868) than there were in 2008 (667) achieving an "Exceeding" score in one or more areas in grades 5 - 8. This is approximately a 30% increase from 2008.

The CRCT is an important benchmark for our students, and the strides and gains they are making demonstrate their capabilities to meet the challenges of an ever changing education landscape. We are proud of all our students and teachers and commend them for their hard work. These results demonstrate their efforts are paying dividends.

Classes begin at all Marietta City Schools, August 10. We'll see you soon.

Sincerely,

Dr. Emily Lembeck, Superintendent
Marietta City Schools
