HIGH SCHOOL CULINARY STUDENT PLACES
1ST IN STATE CULINARY ARTS COMPETITION
Adkisson, Marietta senior and ProStart culinary arts student
Marietta, GA - Marietta High School (MHS) senior and ProStart culinary arts student, Kevin Adkisson placed first in the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) state Culinary Arts Competition held Oct. 10 at the Georgia National Fair in Perry, GA. As the state
winner, he received a $300 cash prize and a fly-in weekend to visit Johnson & Wales University.
Ten students from high schools across Georgia competed in two categories. The first was a 30-minute knife skills demonstration, the second was a 60-minute hot food competition.
Adkisson’s winning menu featured Sun dried Tomato and Golden Raisin Stuffed Chicken Breast Roulade, Sautéed Asparagus and Julienne of Carrot, and Herbed Couscous.
“The chef judges were extremely impressed with Kevin’s professionalism, organization, knife skills and flavor components in his dish,” said Dee Smith, MHS ProStart instructor. “The state FCCLA competition is the equivalent of the “Iron Chef” contest for high school students.”
Three industry professionals judged the contest, Chef Elizabeth Baase, Vice President Southeastern Region American Culinary Federation, Chef Andrew Miller, Culinary Instructor Le Cordon Bleu Atlanta and student culinary competition coach, and Chef Nathan Greven, Culinary
Instructor Carroll County Tech Center.
