LOCKHEED ELEMENTARY AWARDED $39,500
USDA FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLE GRANT
Lockheed, one of twenty-seven schools awarded statewide
Marietta, GA - Marietta City Schools (MCS) today announced the receipt of a U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA) Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) grant awarded to Lockheed Elementary School. The one-year grant, valued at $39,500 is one of only 27 awarded statewide.
“This grant is part of the Farm Bill and we are fortunate to receive this award for our elementary students at Lockheed,” states Sandy Laffan, MCS Director of School Nutrition. “The USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program grant offers us an opportunity to provide Lockheed
students with a nutritious snack during the school day to help them stay focused on learning.’
“Last year, we were the first school system in Georgia to receive the Produce for Better Health Foundation’s (PBH) National Award of Excellence for continually educating students and staff about the importance of consuming fruits and vegetables as part of a healthy diet,” said MCS Superintendent Dr. Emily Lembeck. “This USDA grant allows us to extend this effort in a targeted manner at Lockheed Elementary.”
“Our commitment to increasing fruit and vegetable consumption by serving a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables daily to students is part of the school district’s wellness program,” added Laffan.
