Friday Richards Announces Retirement
Richards, retires after 16 seasons as head coach
Marietta, GA - Marietta High School (MHS) Blue Devil Head Coach, Friday Richards, today
announced his retirement. Richards, a University of Florida graduate, will retire at the end of the
2009-2010 school year, after 16 seasons as head football coach and 33 years of coaching at
MHS. He will continue teaching on a part-time basis at MHS in the 2010-2011 school year.
“Coach Friday has played a significant role in what we know to be the best of Marietta
football and track history and tradition. His heart, love for his players, and commitment to their
college acceptance are his greatest legacy,” said Leigh Colburn, MHS Principal. “Coach Friday
is a true Blue Devil. He loves our city and our high school, and our community cherishes him.
We have been blessed by his tenure and service.”
Richards, and his wife Dorothy, are respected members of the Marietta community. Their
youth mentorship work over the past 33 years has helped over 100 athletes secure scholarships to
colleges and universities including Georgia Tech, University of Georgia, Vanderbilt, Clemson,
the Naval Academy, Stanford and West Point.
