Middle School Hosts Bunce Island
Traveling Museum Exhibit, Feb. 2-5
Partnership with Kennesaw State University
Marietta, GA - Marietta Middle School (MMS) in partnership with Kennesaw State University
hosts the Bunce Island Traveling Museum Exhibit – the exhibit in the Seminar Room at MMS
will be open to the public during MMS Conference Week, Feb. 2 – Feb. 5, 2010. The exhibit
tells the story of Bunce Island, a British slave castle in Sierra Leone.
“This exhibit is made possible thanks to the educational partnership between the MMS
Humanities Department and Kennesaw State University,” said Belva Kohler, MMS Social
Studies/Humanities Department Chair. “This is an excellent opportunity to learn the story of
Sierra Leone’s Bunce Island and understand its legacy of connections to coastal Georgia.”
The Bunce Island exhibit consists of 20 door-size display panels, each containing text and
images illustrating Bunce Island's history and its links to North America. The exhibit includes
period drawings of the castle made in 1726, 1748, and 1805 and other pictures illustrating the
slave trade era in Sierra Leone and North America. There are also photos of the ruins of Bunce
Island today as well as computer-generated reconstruction drawings showing how Bunce Island
appeared in the year 1805. For more information about the Bunce Island exhibit, visit
