Sawyer Road Elementary Selected To Participate
Alliance Theatre Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists
One of 12 Metro area schools selected for 2010—2013 program

Marietta, GA - Sawyer Road Elementary School is one of only 12 elementary schools selected to participate in the 2010-2013 Alliance Theatre Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists partnership program. The Institute program focus on Georgia Wolf Trap (Pre-K – K) offers quality professional learning for teachers who want to integrate drama strategies with the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS).

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Academy at Sawyer Road Elementary provides K-5 students an interdisciplinary, student-centered academic program that develops a global perspective through inquiry-based learning. "Each of our Kindergarten classes will benefit because the Institute partnership directly supports our IB program," said Jill Sims, principal of Sawyer Road Elementary. "The Institute’s research, data and outside evaluation results show that the professional learning provided for teachers produces increased student achievement and builds drama and language arts skills."

Sawyer Road’s kindergarten teachers will attend a 3-day workshop in June at the Alliance Theatre Teacher Institute, and an artist-in-residence will work with each teacher and class for 14 sessions per year. The Institute program components include a Summer Seminar, a field trip to The Alliance Theatre or Collision Tour, play previews and workshops, an in-school residency and increased opportunities for PLU courses in theatre arts.
