MCAA Named 2013 National
Blue Ribbon School of Excellence
MCAA one of 236 public schools nationwide
to achieve 2013 Blue Ribbon recognition
MARIETTA, GA -– Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (MCAA) is one of 236 public schools nationwide recognized by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan as the 2013 cohort of National Blue Ribbon Schools, based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in improving student academic achievement. Secretary Duncan made this year’s announcement live via the Department's USTREAM channel.
“The Exemplary High Performing school designation for MCAA illustrates the dedication, passion and collaboration of staff, students, families, and our Partners in Education that have invested in a shared vision of academic excellence,” said MCAA Principal Jennifer Hernandez. “Our students experience an accelerated curriculum that emphasizes science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in a one-to-one computing environment.”
The National Blue Ribbon Schools program “Exemplary High Performing” performance category recognizes schools that are among their state’s highest performing schools, as measured by state assessments or nationally-normed tests.
“Excellence in education matters and we should honor the schools that are leading the way to prepare students for success in college and careers,” said Secretary Duncan. “National Blue Ribbon schools represent examples of educational excellence, and their work reflects the belief that every child in America deserves a world-class education.”
MCAA is a unique elementary (grades 3-5) magnet school in the Marietta City School District. Students experience an accelerated curriculum that emphasizes science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in a one-to-one computing environment, and they learn through an interdisciplinary project-based learning approach. The school was recognized in 2012 as the first STEM Certified School in the State, in 2010 as a Georgia School of Excellence in Student Achievement, in 2009 for the Georgia Department of Education State Superintendent’s Distinguished Achievement Award and numerous years as a Georgia Platinum Award Winner for Student Achievement.
