The mission of the Jane Riley Media Center is to support the teaching of Georgia Performance Standards and to enhance arts integration at Hickory Hills Elementary. Our Media Center contains approximately 8,000 items of age-appropriate material to fulfill this mission. Audio-visual equipment and materials, housed in the Media Center, are available for teachers to use in the classroom.
Instruction is given in 21st Century Skills, which includes information, technology and media proficiencies. Content knowledge and literacies are blended into activities and assessments under the collaborative direction of the media specialist and classroom teacher with a special focus on differentiation. All of this comes together to assist students in mastering the abilities required of them in the 21st century.

Resources
The Media Center has computers for student use. All library functions are fully automated. Students use the automated catalog to locate any material in the library. The Media Center catalog is available to any classroom in the building through the school computer network.
We participate in the Accelerated Reader program, which was designed to encourage students to read at the appropriate reading level. Books that are too easy do not encourage growth; books that are too difficult cause frustration. The most productive level is in between: books that are both pleasurable and challenging.Students:
- Must return or renew previously checked out library books.
- May come to the library once per day with teacher's permission.
- May checkout 1 book if in kindergarten 2 in first grade, and 3 books in 2nd through 5th grades.
- Must return or renew books before the due date.
- Will receive limited checkout privileges if books are not returned.
- Must pay for damaged or lost books.
