Probationary Cycle

  • When a student’s performance is deemed unsatisfactory in the gifted education classroom, a referral will be made by the appropriate teacher and the MILE teacher to the M.E.T.

    The student’s parents will be notified by the MET that the student’s placement in the gifted program is in jeopardy, and the student is placed on probation. The M.E.T. in coordination with the appropriate teachers will designate intervention strategies and goals that will be used over the probationary period. At the conclusion of the probationary period, the M.E.T will determine whether the student will continue to receive gifted services or will be withdrawn from the gifted program.

    Probationary Period

    Probation should ordinarily last no less than one grading period and no more than one school year. A grading period is defined as 9 weeks for elementary and middle school students, and 6 weeks for high school students. There may be extenuating circumstances for probation to last more than the designated time period, such as continuing illness. Any application of extenuating circumstances for an extended probation must be recommended by the local school MILE Eligibility Team and approved by the gifted education program supervisor.

    Plan of Improvement (POI)

    The MILE Eligibility Team with the assistance of the gifted teachers will design a Plan of Development Contract for the student, with appropriate intervention strategies and goals. Intermediate grade students and older should be present with parents in the discussion and development of the POIThe student will continue to receive gifted education services during the probationary period. At the conclusion of the established probationary time frame, the MILE Eligibility Team and the appropriate teachers will reconvene to review the current performance of the student. A copy of the POI will be placed in the student’s gifted education file.

    Satisfactory Performance following a Plan of Improvement

    If the student has successfully completed the Plan of Improvement, he or she will continue to receive gifted education service. A Plan of Improvement Successfully Completed letter will be sent to the parents or guardians. A copy of the form is to be placed in the student’s gifted education file.

    Unsatisfactory Performance following a Plan of Improvement

    If the student’s performance continues to be unsatisfactory, the student will be withdrawn from gifted education services. A Program Withdrawal form will be sent to the parents/guardians. A copy of the Program Withdrawal form will be retained in the student’s gifted education file.

    Re-Entry

    Students who have exited the program due to unsatisfactory performance may re-enter the gifted program when satisfactory performance has been demonstrated for one school year. Anyone eligible for making a referral may refer a student for re-entry. Students in grades 9 – 12 may make the application if it is countersigned by the parent. Once the Re-Entry Form is completed, the local school MILE Eligibility Team will determine the process of re-entry. Depending on the length of time since the student exited the program, new assessment data may be needed. Students who exit the gifted program for reasons other than unsatisfactory performance may also re-enter the program using the Re-Entry form.
