Applications of Communications
Applications of Communications is an eighth grade exploratory course. This course introduces students to the basic concepts of the Communications career fields. Students will explore these career fields within cooperative learning simulation and writing projects.

Career Discovery
Career Discovery is a seventh grade exploratory course. The goal of this course is to promote essential skills and knowledge students need to apply self-assessments and decision-making skills while examining career concentrations and pathways.
This course will expose students to positive work ethics, the importance of educational achievement, and the impact of societal issues on career choices. These essential components are necessary for educational and career planning success.
In this course, middle school students will gain an understanding of career program concentrations and career pathways offerings in Georgia.

Career Management
Career Management is an eighth grade exploratory course.
The goal of this course is to promote essential knowledge, skills and attitudes students need to make key decisions about career options, high school curricular offerings relating to a pathway of their choice, and postsecondary and workforce opportunities. Instructional focus will address interpersonal skills, management skills, employability skills, self-awareness, educational and career planning.

Drama
Theater Arts is open to all MMS students in grades 7 & 8. Students begin their course study by learning to incorporate sensory and emotional experiences and observation techniques into presentational theatre activities.
They apply vocal and movement techniques appropriate to theatre activities and presentations. The students learn beginning technical theatre skills, such as lighting and staging. Students also begin performing in local school productions and participate in drama club activities and workshops to enhance drama skills. Students study the art of improvisation, monologues and dialogues, storytelling, fairy tales, and fables.

General Music
General Music is a seventh and eighth grade exploratory course. This course provides more in-depth exploration of creating, performing, and responding to music, while connecting the world of music to other areas of learning and personal endeavors.

Guitar Techniques is a seventh and eighth grade exploratory course. Students will explore a varied repertoire of music to be able to read, perform, improvise melodies, variations, and accompaniments, compose and arrange music within specified guidelines, and understand relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts. Also, students should be able to listen to, analyze, and describe music, and evaluate music and music performances.

Invention and Innovation
Invention and Innovation is a seventh grade exploratory course. This course is designed to introduce students to the world of invention and innovation along with the Engineering Design Process.
Students will examine the impacts of invention and innovation on society and solve problems through research, design, and experimentation in one or more of the areas of Engineering and Technology. Students will work individually and in groups to investigate solutions to technological problems, using research, data collection, design, prototype development, and working models.

Media Arts
Media Arts is a seventh and eighth grade exploratory course. The Media Arts curriculum continues increasing students’ critical thinking abilities, creativity and curiosity.
Students will gain the tools to appreciate the multiplicity of creative, cultural and historical perspectives in visual media. Students develop their unique creative skills thru technology by exploring multiple platforms, such as animation, broadcast, film, graphic design/illustration, photography, and web design.

MS Business and Computer Science
MS Business and Computer Science is a seventh and eighth grade exploratory course. Using project-based instruction, students are introduced to the principles of business in the 21st century while refreshing their keyboarding skills. This course should also help students to use computers effectively in their lives, thus providing a connection of computer science and business careers.

Music Technology
Music Technology is a seventh and eighth grade exploratory course. Students will learn and expand the concepts of music technology, and its use in current music production methods.

Technological Systems
Technological systems is an eighth grade exploratory course. This course reinforces the areas of math, science, social studies, and language arts through practical application and/or hands-on activities.
At the end of this course, students will be able to utilize the universal systems model to design and produce a technological product.This exploratory course meets every day for nine weeks.
Visual Arts
Visual Arts is open to all MMS students in seventh and eighth grade. The coursework begins by focusing on meaning and creative thinking, contextual understanding, assessment, reflection, and production to make connections from the world of art to other areas of learning and personal endeavors related to other disciplines. Students learn the basic elements of visual arts and study collage, mixed media, drawing, print-making, painting, kinetic sculpture, ceramics, and bookmaking.

Band
Band is open to all MMS students in grades 7 and 8. We start at the very beginning learning how to assemble the instruments properly without damaging them and proceed into producing basic characteristic sounds on the instruments. Attention is given to embouchure, tone, timbre, and support from the beginning. First year students play from a method book and proceed into full band compositions as they progress.
Students also learn historical information regarding their particular instruments and instrumental music in general. Not only are students encouraged to study privately on their instruments, opportunities are provided for small ensembles including jazz band, percussion ensemble, woodwind choir, and brass choir. Students are also encouraged to take part in various activities sanctioned by the Georgia Music Educators Association. The activities include solo and ensemble, all-state, honor band, and large group festival.
This is a year-long, daily course.
Chorus
Chorus is open to all Marietta Middle School students in grades 7 and 8. The MMS chorus is a performance-based class in which students who desire to further develop their musical skills may do so by performing in a vocal ensemble. Music theory and ear training are integral components of this course and coincide with singing rehearsals in order to further develop all chorus students as skilled musicians.
This is a year-long, daily course.
ComPAny Theatre
Math Connections
Math Connections is designed to meet the needs of students who need additional help in order to achieve grade level standards in mathematics. The purpose of Math Connections is to close identified gaps in computation, numeracy, and problem-solving. Students review skills and concepts missed in previous grade levels. The objectives of this course follow the state GSE Math Standards and Marietta City Schools’ Curriculum.
This is a year-long course which meets every other day.
Orchestra
Orchestra is open to seventh and eighth grade students. This year-long, performance-based class is an intermediate performing ensemble for string players. Skills and concepts from the previous year are developed and expanded upon. In addition to continued refinement of individual performance skills, greater emphasis is placed on ensemble performance skills.
Students will continue to develop their knowledge of music theory, begin to analyze and evaluate music, and use critical thinking skills to make refinements in their performance. Individual and ensemble performance skills will be expanded through musical expression and technical accuracy. Individual growth and achievement are encouraged through participation in adjudicated solo and ensemble festivals, district honor orchestras, and private lessons.
This is a performance-based class. Participation in concert performances outside of regular class hours is required. This is a year-long, daily course.
Physical Education / Health
The Marietta Middle School Physical Education and Health Programs are designed to promote and educate the students physically, socially and mentally. A combination of health topics, team sports and fitness activities are taught in hopes of leading students in the development of a healthy lifestyle.
This is a year-long course which meets every other day.
Reading Connections
Reading Connections is designed to meet the needs of students who need additional help in order to achieve grade level standards in English Language Arts. The purpose of Reading Connections is to close identified gaps through the use of fluency, decoding, and reading comprehension. Lessons are in accordance with the state GSE objectives and Marietta City Schools’ Curriculum.
This is a year-long course which meets every other day.
