MHS IB Programme Entry Requirements

  • MHS IB Programme Entry

expandEntry into the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) – Grades 9-10

All Marietta High School 9th and 10th grade students participate in the IB Middle Years Programme, studying on-level IB MYP classes and/or honors MYP classes for students seeking greater challenge.  Honors MYP courses are intended to prepare students for the rigor of IB Diploma courses in grades 11 and 12 and should be taken  by students who wish to later study in the IB Diploma or IB Career-related Programmes (11th and 12th grade.)  Students who wish to pursue the IB Diploma should plan their grade 9-10 coursework carefully to include the MYP honors courses.  Click here for more details about the IB Middle Years Programme at MHS.

expandEntry into the IB Diploma Programme (DP) – Grades 11-12

Beginning in 2016, students will no longer need to complete a written application for the IB Diploma Programme.

Students who wish to seek the IB Diploma should take honors courses in grades 9 and 10 to assure they have the consistent “presumed knowledge” and background expected of students when they enter the IB Diploma Programme in grade 11.  Students are also expected to be on track to earn the IB Middle Years Certificate in tenth grade.  Students who do not meet these requirements due to special circumstances should contact the IB Director to discuss the possibility of entering the program.

IMPORTANT:  Students who take MYP honors courses may continue their IB coursework in the related IB DP subject areas.   Midway through the sophomore year those 10th graders who wish to pursue the IB Diploma should schedule an IB planning conference with the IB Director to plan their IB Diploma or IB Career-related Certificate schedules.  A conference calendar of possible dates and times will be available through the MHS IB office.  We encourage you to attend one of our program orientation sessions for a detailed explanation of the program and an opportunity to ask questions.  Meeting dates will be posted on the MHS web site calendar and on the MHS IB Diploma webpage.

expandEntry into the IB Career-related Programme (CP)

Students who wish to seek the IB Career-related Certificate should take honors courses in grades 9 and 10 in as many subjects as possible to have wider choice in their DP subject options in the Career-related Programme in grades 11 and 12. Honors courses help assure students have the consistent “presumed knowledge” and background expected of students when they enter the 11th and 12th grade IB programmes.  Students are also expected to be on track to earn the IB Middle Years Certificate in tenth grade.

In addition, students interested in the IB CP should begin courses in one of the career pathways approved for the IB Career-related Certificate in 9th and/or 10th grade. Students must complete 3 years in the career pathway and take the end of pathway exam to be eligible for the IB Career-related Certificate.

Students who do not meet these requirements due to special circumstances should contact the IB Director or CTAE Director to discuss the possibility of entering the program.

IMPORTANT:  Midway through the sophomore year those 10th graders who wish to pursue the IB Career-related Certificate should schedule an IB planning conference with the IB director or the IB CP coordinator.  A conference calendar of possible dates and times will be available through the MHS IB office.  We encourage you to attend our program orientation session for a detailed explanation of the program and an opportunity to ask questions.  Meeting dates will be posted on the MHS web site calendar and on the MHS IB Diploma webpage.
