Marietta cadets explore leadership pathways at the University of North Georgia

Marietta, GA — More than 30 Marietta High School Air Force Junior ROTC cadets visited the University of North Georgia (UNG) for the district’s first campus tour centered on the UNG Corps of Cadets—one of only six federally recognized senior military colleges in the nation.

The trip reflected a shared priority among MCS College Advisors and AFJROTC instructors to connect students with postsecondary options aligned to the district’s Three E’s: Enrollment, Employment, and Enlistment.

“Our job is to open doors,” said Superintendent Dr. Grant Rivera. “Whether our graduates choose to be enrolled, enlisted, or employed, experiences like this remind students there are many ways to lead and serve—and that their future can start right here in Marietta.”

During the visit, cadets met with senior officers, learned about academic and leadership programs, and explored pathways to commissioning or civilian leadership careers. Thatcher Whitehouse, a Marietta High School graduate and current UNG cadet, guided the group around the Dahlonega campus and shared his experience in the Boar’s Head Brigade.

“This is about helping our students see themselves in new possibilities,” said Andra Brantley, Marietta High School College Advisor. “Meeting a former Blue Devil like Thatcher who’s thriving at a senior military college makes that path feel real and attainable.”

Designated by the Georgia General Assembly as the state’s leadership institution, UNG is known for developing students for service, scholarship, and leadership. For Marietta cadets, the visit was a meaningful step in a growing pipeline of Blue Devils preparing to lead in college, in the workforce, and in service to their country.
