Marietta City Schools honors excellence with “Be Somebody” and “Blue Devil” Awards

Marietta City Schools honors excellence with “Be Somebody” and “Blue Devil” Awards

MARIETTA, GA – Marietta’s storied past connected with its brightest hopes for the future on Monday, December 16, as Mayor Steve “Thunder” Tumlin and Superintendent Dr. Grant Rivera went on a day-long tour through all 12 Marietta City Schools presenting teachers and students with the “Be Somebody Award” and the “Blue Devil Award.”

The “Be Somebody Award” was given to educators who nurture young minds with endless dedication, while the “Blue Devil Award” was given to students who are leaders. This journey was a series of ceremonies and a profound affirmation of Marietta’s timeless call to “Be Somebody”—a mantra etched into the community’s character decades ago by Coach Ben “Big Ben” Wilkins.

“Our educators and students truly exemplify the spirit of Marietta,” said Dr. Rivera. “They are role models who remind us that excellence isn’t confined to the classroom, field, or auditorium—it permeates every aspect of our community. By carrying the legacy of Coach Wilkins, they reinforce our district’s collective responsibility to live up to the standards of ‘Be Somebody.’ We couldn’t be more proud of them.”

Every handshake, cheer, and word of gratitude spoke to a collective commitment to preserve Marietta’s heritage and propel it forward.

“In honoring those who give so much to our community—whether students, teachers, or staff—we’re celebrating the heart of Marietta,” said Mayor Tumlin. “Recognizing these 24 individuals in their school, surrounded by peers and family, just feels right. The impact of that appreciation can last a lifetime. A great community isn’t defined by its streets and stop signs but by the people who live, learn, and work here. When we surround ourselves with good people, we create safer, stronger neighborhoods where everyone cares for each other.”

By honoring the tireless efforts of teachers who shape the minds of tomorrow and the students who carry the banner of excellence into the future, Marietta ensures that the spirit of “Be Somebody” will continue to resonate, inspiring generations yet to come.
