MCS celebrates 10 graduates from the Special Education New Teacher Retention Academy (SENTRA)

MARIETTA, GA – Marietta City Schools continues to strengthen its commitment to identifying innovative methods for special education by celebrating the graduation of 10 educators from the Special Education New Teacher Retention Academy (SENTRA) for the 2025-26 school year. The program equips new MCS teachers with the tools, confidence, and ongoing support needed to remain in the profession and deliver high-quality services that help students thrive.

SENTRA is a collaborative effort with regional support extended by the Georgia Department of Education, Division for Special Education Services and Supports, through the Metro West Georgia Learning Resource System (GLRS) Team. It is also supported by the Georgia Teacher/Provider Retention Program and MCS partners, SA Recycling.

“This program is helping us retain exceptional educators and empower them to lead and grow, which directly impacts the success of our students,” said Tris Gilland, MCS Chief of Student Services. “Every investment we make in our teachers strengthens opportunities for students and helps build a brighter future for every child we serve.”

Through a strong partnership with Kennesaw State University, participants engaged in hands-on learning, including simulated interactions with “life-like” students in KSU’s Avatar Lab. These immersive experiences allow teachers to practice real-world strategies in a supportive and innovative environment.

The grant also provides vital classroom and teacher resources, stipends for participants, and comprehensive support throughout the year. Teachers receive individualized coaching, classroom observations with actionable feedback, opportunities to build strong connections with colleagues, and a welcoming dinner at the outset of each class, sponsored by local business partners.
