MCS celebrates graduates from new teacher retention academy
MARIETTA, GA – The Marietta City Schools Special Education New Teacher Retention Academy (SENTRA) celebrated the graduation of 12 new educators from its training program for the 2024-25 school year during a special ceremony on March 17 at Central Office. This year’s ceremony highlights the academy's growth, welcoming two more graduates than the previous cohort, reflecting increased interest and commitment to special education.
SENTRA collaborates with the Georgia Department of Education's Division for Special Education Services and Supports and benefits from regional support through the Metro West Georgia Learning Resource System (GLRS) Team. The Georgia Teacher/Provider Retention Grant from the US Department of Education's Office of Special Education Programs funds the initiative.
“The dedication of these new educators, developed through SENTRA, significantly strengthens our ability to provide exceptional education,” said Michele Sayles Harris, MCS Chief of Special Services and Educational Supports. “Their commitment is transforming the educational landscape across Marietta, ensuring profound benefits for every student they teach.”
A key partnership with Kennesaw State University (KSU) enhances the program by offering cutting-edge learning experiences, including practical simulations with “life-like” students in KSU’s Avatar Lab, providing participants with a hands-on educational setting. SA Recycling Marietta also played a huge role in sponsoring a beautiful ceremony on Monday.
The academy supports its teachers extensively, providing vital classroom resources, a stipend, and comprehensive mentoring, including one-on-one coaching and classroom observations with constructive feedback. Each session begins with a welcoming dinner, supported by local businesses, to build community connections.
