Inclement Weather

Marietta City Schools Inclement Weather Procedures

When Marietta City Schools (MCS) is advised by the National Weather Service of possible inclement weather in the coming hours or days, our MCS team will implement a district protocol focused on communication and preparedness. Such efforts include but are not limited to bus transportation, school meal service, extracurricular events, and school building readiness.

MCS will also make every effort to over-communicate with you regarding inclement weather and potential school closings. In an effort to best support your student and family, you can expect the following weather-related updates:

  • Evening communication: When we have been advised of inclement weather for the following day, you will receive an email from MCS by 5:00 p.m. and, if necessary, a follow-up at 9:00 p.m. The purpose of these updates is to share our most up-to-date information and timeline regarding possible school closings.
  • Morning communication: You will receive an email update by 5:00 a.m. on the morning that possible inclement weather could result in school closings. In such situations, we will collaborate with the National Weather Service, Marietta Police Department, Cobb County School District, and other metro-Atlanta school districts. Our goal is simple: make an informed, cautious decision as early as possible so you and your family can plan accordingly.

How will I know if/when schools are closed?

Please know the safety of our students and your family is our priority. We will always make decisions out of an abundance of caution and, at the same time, communicate with you early and often.

When a final decision is made regarding school closings, all MCS families will be notified through the following mediums:

  1. Email
  2. Automated text and phone call message
  3. MCS District Website (www.marietta-city.org)
  4. Local television and radio broadcasts
  5. District social media pages:

Get Ready: Prepare, Plan, Stay Informed

  1. Prepare by assembling a Ready Kit of supplies for both your home and your car.
  2. Make a plan for responding to various threats and reconnecting with family members if you are separated during a disaster.
  3. Stay informed about your risk for a range of emergencies and make sure you have a way to stay connected during a disaster.
  4. Familiarize yourself with the terms that are used to identify weather emergencies.
