Orton-Gillingham Training Made Possible for MCS Teachers Through Lucia and Mark Wilton Foundation Donation of $225,000

During the April 2018 Board of Education meeting, the Board recognized the Lucia and Mark Wilton Foundation for their generous donation to support literacy in Marietta City Schools.
The district intends to make a long-term commitment to prioritize literacy and language development, with particular emphasis in grades Pre-K through 5.
This framework will allow for consistent instructional practice and professional learning across all elementary schools in MCS.  The comprehensive framework will include the following elements:
  • All teachers of Pre-K will implement Read Right from the Start strategies with a focus on phonological awareness and language development
  • All teachers of K through 3rd grade will implement Benchmark Phonics (timeline of implementation school years 2019 - 2022)
  • All teachers of 1st through 3rd grade will participate in 30 hours of comprehensive training in Orton-Gillingham (Classroom Educator Level)
  • All teachers of 4th and 5th grades will implement the MCS Balanced Literacy Framework
The Lucia and Mark Wilton Foundation donated $225,000 for teacher training and student materials.
